Title: Call It Sleep
Rating: PG
Inspiration: "Call It Sleep" by Slaid Cleaves
POV: 1st, mine

It's late. I'm tired, Gerard's tired. We want nothing more than to stop at a good motel, rent a room, curl up to one-another and go to sleep. But we can't. Not yet. We've got to travel on for tonight.
So, we stop at a gas station to get coffee and something to eat. We get out of the car and walk into the store. It's cold outside, so Gerard puts his arm around me to try to keep me warm. I can't help but smile and think of how much I love him.
After we've bought what we want, we go back out to the car and get in. Gerard starts it up and turns on one of the inside lights so we can see. The radio's playing softly and I recognize "Demolition Lovers" on the CD that's playing. Gerard looks in the rear-view mirror and adjusts it a little. I study him as he puts the car in gear. Gee looks tired, he's kind of pale and there are dark shadows under his hazel eyes. Even so, he's beautiful. The most beautiful thing I've ever laid eyes on.
We pull back onto the highway. I lean my seat back and open the pack of poptarts that I got at the store.
"When are we gonna stop, Gee?"
"Sunrise. First good place I see after dawn, we're stopping."
Gerard and I are taking this trip by night. Seeing the whole country by moonlight, stopping at sunrise and leaving as the sun sets. Tonight we're somewhere in Tennessee, I think. Where ever it is it's pretty and cold and there are rolling hills around us and mountains in the distance.
I yawn sleepily and lean my head against Gerard's shoulder, propping my feet up on the dash.
"Tired?" He asks me.
"Mhm. Very." I reply. "I know you are, too."
"Yeah, I am pretty tired."
But even though we are tired, we're enjoying the trip. The countryside is so beautiful.
"Hey, put that Steve Earle album in." Gerard says.
I lean forward and grab my copy of Washington Square Serenade and put it in the CD slot. A few seconds later, "Tennessee Blues" starts playing. I sigh and start tracing little, pointless designs on the thigh of Gerard's jeans with my finger.
"If you wanna go to sleep, go ahead. I know you're really tired." He tells me.
"Nah." I yawn again. "If you stay up, I stay up."
"Okay."
As the highway turns into a four lane, we start to head up a mountain. I stare out the window at the woods on the mountainside. The trees look like ghosts.
It's quiet, it's peaceful, it's perfect. There's nowhere else I'd rather be on Earth.
Gerard starts to quietly sing along to "Sparkle And Shine". His voice is soft and haunting, almost like a lullaby. Certainly the only lullaby I ever want to hear.
And even though I had every intention of staying up, I soon fall asleep; listening to the sound of Gerard's voice and watching the woods outside of the car window.
-----------------
Product of boredom. I like it though.
