Lights flicker as each man, woman, and child wait for their turn. They had been waiting for several hours, and were all weak, tired, and hopeless. They were shackled with large, noisy chains around the ankles and wrists. Some were even shackled around the neck to assure that they would not escape.
Right about now you would assume that these people, bound in chains and waiting, were criminals. They were not - they were all innocent.
Gerard stands at the very end of this long line. He had been taken by the military men, and he had lost his whole life. He wasn’t saddened, or worried. He was one of the few people there that was able to say that he wanted vengeance and then would be able to say he would get it.
The line had slowly progressed. It hadn’t taken long for them to realize that they were not on their way to prison cells, but rather to their deaths. They had been waiting in line to be hanged. Hanging was known for being a quick, quiet death and during these murders, it had remained truthful.
Gerard could hear the screams and cries of the people in front of him, but he maintained a calm spirit while waiting.
By the time he made it to the beginning of the line, where the hanging was, it was so quiet that he could hear his own heart beat. A military man grabbed him by the back of the neck. His hand was so large it could wrap around Gerard's neck and snap it in half if he so wished, but he didn’t. He had his orders to take Gerard and hang him, so he led him to the gallows.
Gerard was silent. He said nothing, he didn't make any sound. He allowed the man to wrap the rope around his neck. He allowed the man to pull the lever that should have killed him.
That lever, which had killed so many other innocent people, did not kill Gerard. He couldn’t die.
Death cannot claim a soul twice.

This is hopefully the intro to a several chapter long story that I am writing.
I can't say much because I don't really want to foretell what's going to happen in future chapters, but if what I write turns out to be what I want it to be, then you readers have a good story to look forward to.
In the mean time, critique and comments are appreciated.
